Crystal Hammer

Back in the days before we had external computer speakers (or even a sound card for that matter - when 'multi-media' meant 2 floppy disk drives.. "multi" geddit?), when "MP3" was still in its infancy, when Sony Walkmen rule and digital portable music media player devices weren't invented yet, we used to play around with .MOD files.

These are music files that - if you play it through the appropriate players - will enable music to play through the computers' internal speakers. Yes I kid you not, these things will play accurately through that tiny speaker inside the computer that usually goes "BEEP" on startup, on my super duper old 80286 computer.

Now kids, if you don't know what a 80286 is, go ask your granddaddy. This was effectively my second computer after the Apple ][. These monsters can weigh up to 20+ kg with monitors and cost ahecklotofmoney. And back in the early 90s, it was hardly cutting edge. Which is why it was so much fun to play mod files through internal speakers. For something that produces beeps and clicks to suddenly bring actual music to our ears without a sound card seemed like an extraordinary feat.

So anyway, there were few mod files friends and I particular liked listening to for fun, and one of them is - Crystal Hammer. Apparently I'm not the only one, because some dude even uploaded this song onto youtube to share with all. And I just found out the origins of it, it was from an Amiga game of the same name.
